While Christmas is a peak season for retailers, it is a headache that people preferred to stay home during the pandemic. Invited by Harbour City, a flagship shopping mall, I developed an online photo booth for the mall.
Users can choose a site photo among 12 photo hotspots of the mall as the background and paste a portrait photo of themselves. After that, they can share the synthesised photo to their relatives and friends to spread the seasonal joyfulness.
The feeling of Christmas atmosphere is the core goal during the design process of the project. People may feel sad that they could not go out to meet friends or appreciate the decorations in this Xmas.
It would be a satisfaction if they can see the Xmas installations and light decorations of Harbour City even staying home. They can also upload a photo of their friends and send it as a greeting card.
Traditionally, real-time background removal requires a green screen background or a depth camera. These methods are not a well-fitted for home-use application.
Instead, I used TensorFlow, an open-source machine learning library, to identify and segment the persons on the photo uploaded by the user. This method requires no extra equipment, which makes the whole process simple and intuitive. In addition, the result is fast and accurate.
